Real estate Omišalj

OMIŠALJ is the only settlement in the Bay of Rijeka that can be seen from all sides. At an altitude of 85 meters, on the northwest side of the island of Krk dominates almost three kilometers long bay. Such a convenience has caught the eye of prehistoric inhabitants, and the life of Omišalj has lasted for tens of thousands of years.

On the opposite coast of the Ert Peninsula, which surrounds the bay from the southwest, Fulfinium was probably built in Roman times, along with Kurikum (Krk), then the second most important island settlement; it is thought to have disappeared at the time of the disintegration of the Roman Empire in the 5th century or perhaps somewhat later. Omišalj itself was first mentioned in 1153. Today, as one of the oldest places on the island, Omisalj is an important Glagolitic and cultural center. Omišalj is one of the oldest towns on the island of Krk, dating back to the third century. It is also the first city you will encounter when you come to the island from the mainland, across the Krk Bridge.

The town itself was built on a cliff, as much as 80 meters above the sea from where there is a panoramic view of the Kvarner Bay. Omisalj has preserved its medieval urban structure, and the charming old center with narrow streets is a pedestrian zone. On the main square there is a large parish church of the Assumption with a bell tower, the Town Lodge and the Chapel of St. Helena. Residential buildings have preserved the original rural look characteristic of the island of Krk - many houses have a typical external staircase next to the semicircular entrance to the ground floor and a balcony above the entrance. Along the edge of the cliff there is a walled promenade, perfect for romantic evenings as it offers peace, quiet and a beautiful view of the small marina and the coastal promenade. The winding cobbled streets of the old town and the compact rows of houses preserve the precious cultural and historical heritage. A good start for getting to know the heritage of Omišalj is undoubtedly the local Lapidarium, a small collection of stone monuments that provides a comprehensive insight into the history of Omišalj.
